The home of the elusive Loch Ness monster has been voted Britain's top tourist attraction. It beat The Houses of Parliament and Stonehenge in a search for the country's Seven Tourism Wonders.

Whether it is the history of Urquhart Castle, or the chance to catch a glimpse of a legend, Loch Ness has been enticing visitors for decades. Now, it has been recognised as the UK's favourite tourist trap.

It took nearly half of all 12,000 votes counted in a survey looking for the Seven Wonders of Britain.

By comparison, the Houses of Parliament received just three per cent in the poll carried out by tourist agency VisitBritain and the RAC.

It follows research showing more people have been to the Eifel Tower in Paris than Stonehenge.

But with the credit crunch biting, it's expected that more people will be looking for destinations closer to home to take a break.

Loch Ness is one of those "national treasures" that people are being urged to discover.

the seven attractions are:

1) Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle
2) Whitby Abbey
3) Hadrian's Wall
4) Stonehenge
5) Hardknott Pass
6) Angel of the North
7) The Houses of Parliament
