Labour leader Ed Miliband has thrown his weight behind calls for former RBS boss Sir Fred Goodwin to be stripped of his knighthood.

His support came for the move after Primer Minister David Cameron confirmed the UK Government's honours forfeiture committee would consider the case.

Sir Fred was awarded the honour for his services to banking in 2004, before he oversaw the virtual collapse of RBS in 2008.

On Friday, Labour leader Mr Miliband tweeted: "Fred Goodwin should have knighthood revoked. UK families continue to pay price of his failure - he shouldn’t enjoy privilege of a knighthood."

A Financial Services Authority report about the failures at RBS was critical of Sir Fred and will be part of the case put forward to the committee to withdraw the Paisley-born banker’s title.

Conservative MP Matthew Hancock, who has also called for Sir Fred to be stripped of his knighthood, has put forward a motion in the House of Commons on the issue.
