Staff at Stirling University strike against cuts

Union members at Stirling University walked out in a strike against proposed jobs losses.

Students joined staff in a march from the campus into Stirling town centre. The action was taken in protest at planned compulsory redundancies at the institution.

The strike came after the management announced plans to sack 17 staff at the university's Institute of Aquaculture.

Nearly two thirds of the members of the University College Union voted earlier this month to go on strike. They say the university has failed to consider alternative options.

But the university insists that with a £2 million deficit, the situation was untenable.

On the strike, a university spokeperson said: "The University has a commitment to provide services for its students and will remain open and as far as practicable, fully operational .

"All our staff have been requested to work normally and thereby ensure that classes are held as scheduled. Heads of School have notified students in good time which classes will and will not run today."

The UCU says it is going to launch a petition calling for an independent inquiry into management and governance at Sitrling University. Members have also voted to join a national strike next month.
