Domestic violence campaign launched on eve of Old Firm game

A Facebook campaign against domestic violence has been launched ahead of this weekend's Old Firm match.

The two-month appeal, launched by the charity of Shelter Scotland, follows police statistics showing that fixtures between Celtic and Rangers are accompanied by a sharp rise in domestic abuse.

It's not the first time police have connected efforts to reduce violence in the home with the Old Firm game. In 2009, officers patrolled bars around the time of the match to ensure alcohol was being consumed responsibly and visited homes with a history of domestic abuse.

Alison Watson, head of services at Shelter Scotland, said: "This Facebook campaign aims to ensure anyone who faces the threat of domestic violence this weekend knows that Shelter Scotland has a number of expert services aimed at providing practical advice to help them.

"Over 70% of the women who use our specialist housing services have experienced violence or abuse in their homes. We know many women trapped in an abusive relationship fear losing their home if they stand up to their partner.

"With Strathclyde Police reporting a 41percent rise in domestic violence levels around Old Firm matches, this is no game for those who fear or suffer abuse on the back of a football result."
