Snow closes roads and schools as cold snap continues this week

Further snow and ice alerts have been issued for much of Scotland.

Heavy snow fell overnight on Tuesday in parts on Scotland causing problems on the roads. Forecasters have also warned that further snow is possible on Wednesday and Thursday.

The Met Office said a yellow warning was in place for much of Scotland on Wednesday.

In Aboyne in Aberdeenshire there was around 6cm of snow and many roads in the Grampian area were closed.

Grampian Police warned of hazardous driving conditions across the area particularly on stretches of the A90 between Foveran and Peterhead and Laurencekirk and Stonehaven, the A97 between Aberhirder and Banff, the A96 between Huntly and Elgin and the A975 Cruden Bay to Newburgh road.

The force also advised extra care on roads in Aberdeen city with journey times taking much longer than normal. Motorists are advised to avoid the Great Western Road area in Aberdeen following a two-vehicle crash at around 8.45am.

Police also advised drivers to avoid the Lhanbryde area in Moray due to extremely difficult road conditions. The B974 Banchory to Fettercairn road remains closed.

In Shetland five schools were closed due to adverse weather. The closures included Aith, Skeld, Sandness, Happyhansel and Dunrossness.

In Aberdeenshire ten schools were closed including Ballogie nursery, Banchory-Devenick School, Crossroads Nursery, Durris, Durris School, Finzean School, Forgue School, Gartly School, Logie Coldstone School, Lumphanan School and Towie School.

Tarland School and Tullynessle School were also partially closed to pupils. Transport for pupils was also affected to a number of additional schools.

Flights were also delayed at Aberdeen Airport due to the cold weather. Sumburgh Airport was also closed on Wednesday morning but flights were expected to resume.

STV weatherman Sean Batty warned that more wintry weather is on the way. He said: "Very wintry weather can be expected by the end of the week with a band of rain, sleet and snow spreading in from the west on Thursday.

"Much of this will fall as snow, especially on high levels where significant levels of snow can be expected."
