A luxury yacht has arrived in Dundee on Friday - aimed at helping recovering drug addicts.

Taymara, a Dundee maritime charity which provides training and activities for substance abusers, has been offered the use of the Lady Lex - a 23 metre motor yacht.

The boat set off for Dundee from its former berth in the Balearic sunshine destination of Majorca - a 2300 mile trip - in August.

It was set to arrive in the middle of last month - but bad weather hampered the journey.

The Lady Lex was brought to Dundee by yachtmaster Andrew Jeffrey and two crew members - including one who has previously dealt with substantial substance abuse problems.

The boat - owned by businessman Clive McKeag - has initially berthed in Dundee's Victoria Dock, near the city's Apex Hotel, following a journey that included stops in Alicante and Newcastle.

She will now be used to publicise the charity's work with vulnerable people in the city.

David Kett, of Taymara, said he hoped the arrival of the Lady Lex would help expand the charity's work.

He said: "We have the proof that this works - we have people who have come through and gone on to the merchant navy, for example.

"When they are at sea it is a totally new experience. It gets people away from the city streets and temptations."

Andrew Jeffrey, skipper of Lady Lex, added: "We encountered an interesting storm on our way from Majorca at the Bay of Biscay.

"We left with a good weather forecast - and ended up in a gale force wind. It was throwing water over the wheelhouse as far as the stern."

He said: "She will do some work for the charity here in Dundee, and after that its the owners decision what he wants to do with her."

Paul Smith, a member of the Lady Lex crew who has been helped by Taymara, added: "I had never been interested in seafaring until someone mentioned Taymara to me. I went and spoke to them and I've never looked back."
