RAF Lossiemouth: the future is uncertain Pic: ©:STV
The Scottish Secretary of State is to meet council representatives from Moray in a bid to get a clearer picture of the future of the two RAF bases in the area.
It is in the midst of uncertainty surrounding both Kinloss and Lossiemouth as the UK government's strategic defence review makes cash-saving steps.
The delegation from Moray travelled to London to speak to Michael Moore ahead of the conclusion of the UK Government’s strategic defence and security review.
A recent study found RAF Lossiemouth and RAF Kinloss account for 16% of full-time employment in Moray, with staff and their families making up around 7% of the total population.
Development agency Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) put their estimated contribution to the local economy at £158 m.
There are fears that the defence spending review could lead to cuts at the bases, threatening their future, and Defence Secretary Liam Fox will make an announcement in the last week of October.
Moray Council said a delegation including HIE representatives will meet Mr Moore this afternoon in Whitehall. The discussion is expected to last around an hour.
Council convener George McIntyre said last month: "In addition to the economic input, the RAF personnel and their families play a vital role in the communities in the region with significant contributions to volunteer and charity work.
"It is vital the decision-makers consider the economic and social consequences of the defence review."
