Former Rangers and Denmark star Brian Laudrup has been diagnosed with cancer, it has emerged.
Laudrup, who scored 33 goals in 116 league appearances for Rangers in the 1990s, told a Danish TV programme that he had been diagnosed with a mild form of lymphoma.
He went on to say that he has vowed to win his battle with the disease, and that doctors had given him a “very optimistic” report.
The 41-year-old said: "I am obviously shocked by the diagnosis, but also know that there is now a tough battle ahead of me - a battle I will win.
"Fortunately, I have had very optimistic reports from doctors to support me.
"I now want to use my energy to get over the shock and take time with my family and those closest to me, so together we can move forward after this diagnosis."
He said the cancer had been discovered at a very early stage, and that he planned to carry on his TV commentating work for TV3’s Champion’s League coverage.
In addition to Rangers, Laudrup’s playing career included spells with Bayern Munich, Fiorentina, Ajax and Chelsea. He also holds 82 caps as part of the Danish national team, for whom he scored 21 goals.
