Thick fog affecting roads as number of car accidents reported

Thick fog is affecting roads across the country with several early morning accidents reported.

Traffic Scotland is warning of fog in the Strathclyde, Fife and Lothian and Borders regions with Grampian Police advising motorists to take care on roads in the north-east.

On the M80 near Cumbernauld three cars collided between junctions four and five at around 7.30am.

No one was hurt as a result of the accident and police said it was foggy in the area at the time.

The vehicles were moved to the hard shoulder to be recovered and police are warning of queuing traffic in the area.

The A90 Aberdeen-Dundee road saw two early morning accidents within half a mile of each other. At around 7.30am two cars, Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus, collided three miles south of Laurencekirk.

No one was injured but the road was blocked briefly while both cars were pulled to the side.

Around 15 minutes later three vehicles were involved in an accident 300 yards further south. Grampian Police said one woman had been “shaken-up” and an ambulance had been called to the scene.

The road is not blocked as a result of the accident but police are still at the scene.

A police spokesman warned that fog was becoming worse in the area and visibility was decreasing in the area.

The scene of the accidents is close to where the body of Charlotte Tennant was discovered at the weekend.

The 20-year-old had been out with friends in Fordoun on Friday night and is thought to have been walking to Laurencekirk on the road at around 4am on Saturday when she was struck by a vehicle and killed.

Police officers are investigating the possibility the motorist that hit her may not have been aware as thick fog was blanketing the area at the time.
