A Renfrewshire horserider was released from hospital on Sunday after falling during a prestigious event.

Nicola Malcolm, from Kilbarchan, suffered a head injury when she fell from her mount during the Burghley Horse Trials.

The accident happened during the cross-country phase of the four-star event on Saturday afternoon.

The 22-year-old was treated at the scene, in Lincolnshire, before being airlifted to hospital in Coventry.

She was given the all-clear after undergoing scans on a head injury and was expected to return to the event to watch Sunday afternoon's showjumping finale.

Course designer Mark Phillips said: "My information is that the horse stood off a little too far, hit the fence with its hind legs and the impact catapulted Nicola into the air."

Competition was stopped for around an hour at the event.

British star William Fox-Pitt, who was also taking part, said: "The information we were getting back was that they were getting Nicola away safely. It's when you know nothing about what is going on that it is horrific."

Burghley is one the showpieces of British eventing's season. Miss Malcolm, believed to be a former student at Glasgow Caledonian University, also took part in another, Badminton, earlier this year - they are two of only five annual four-star competitions worldwide.
