A 19-year-old man has been arrested and is in police custody in connection with an alleged attack on a man with a power drill.
The arrest follows a major operation in Stepps, North Lanarkshire, involving around 40 officers. Police are understood to have raided two addresses, one in Lanarkshire and the other in the Blackhill area of Glasgow on Thursday night.
It is understood the arrest is in connection with a serious attack on James Hanlon in the North Lanarkshire town on Sunday August 22. The 26-year-old was treated for head injuries in what was thought to be an attack with a power drill.
Police say that investigations are continuing into the attack and also into an attack on Mr Hanlon's brother Bryan in the Maryhill area of Glasgow.
In that incident, Mr Hanlon was driving along Maryhill Road on Sunday August 29 when his car was forced off the road. It is said he was attacked by a gang of men with chisels and mutilated.
Both Hanlon brothers are said to have been friends of underworld figure Kevin 'The Gerbil' Carroll who was shot dead in January 2010.
A 19-year-old is expected to appear at Airdrie Sheriff Court on Monday September 6.
A report is being sent to the procurator fiscal.
