Drugs trial halted after government campaign launch

A trial of a group of men accused of being involved in cannabis production has been halted because of a high-profile anti-drugs campaign launched by the Justice Secretary.

The campaign by the Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency (SCDEA) was unveiled on Monday. It called on the Scottish public to help them tackle cannabis production in Scotland

The SCDEA released a raft of figures, including the news that Scotland's police forces had sezied nearly £40m worth of cannabis plants in the last four years

More than 130,000 plants had been taken - enough to cover the football pitches at Hampden Park, Ibrox and Celtic Park.

They also released a video showing cannabis plants inside a three-storey townhouse in Glasgow.

Kenny Macaskill said this was serious organised crime - cannabis was often the drug that started people on the dark journey to addiction. But the timing of the campaign launch has had serious repercussions.

As a result of what happened on Monday, a sheriff court trial has been brought to a halt.

The case involved a number of people accused charged with having been involved in cannabis production. The trial has been deserted temporarily following the campaign launch.

Reporting restrictions prevent the release of any further details about the case.
