An Aberdeen paedophile has been convicted for the prolonged abuse of two girls in the city.

63-year-old Arthur Fulton carried out a sex act on one child after she was playing with a doll's house in a garage. He had earlier subjected another girl to abuse during which he would at times expose himself to her when on his own with her.

The victims later revealed to their mother that they had been sexually abused by Fulton.

Fulton initially denied molesting the children when questioned by police in Aberdeen in March this year and was released, the High Court in Edinburgh heard. Advocate depute Morag Jack said: "Two days later the accused made an attempt to take his own life by cutting his wrists."

Days later he was interviewed again by officers and admitted abusing the children although he did not accept all the things that they said he had done. When detained he stated: "Guilty".

Fulton, admitted two charges of indecency against the victims when he appeared in court. He molested his first victim between January 1997 and January 2000, beginning when she was aged six, at an address in Aberdeen.

He abused the second child at houses in the city between October 2004 and March this year again beginning when she was six years old.

Ms Jack said the first child victim grew to hate Fulton and began to realise that what he was doing to her was wrong. Defence counsel Shahid Latif asked that bail be continued for Fulton, who has a previous conviction for indecent exposure, ahead of sentencing next month.

But Lord Kinclaven said Fulton's status had now changed and ordered that he be remanded in custody while a background report with a risk assessment be obtained.

The judge told him: "You now stand convicted in the High Court of two serious offences involving children."

Fulton was put on the sex offenders' register and told that the judge was considering referring him for inclusion on a list of those unsuitable to work with children.
