A 10-year-old girl is in hospital after being savaged by two rottweiler dogs while she was out riding her bike in Dundee.

Rhianna Kidd was attacked around 11am on Sunday August 29 in Dryburgh Street, near to the shops.

The girl suffered a fractured jaw in the attack and will require plastic surgery. The dogs were destroyed on Monday evening.

The girl’s grandmother Irene Grady, who was keeping an eye on Rhianna from her house on Dryburgh Street, hurried to the scene.

"Her dad dropped her off at the end of the road at around 10.30am and I was watching her cycle towards me" said Mrs Grady.

"The next thing I knew, three dogs — two rottweiler and one rottweiler puppy — surrounded her. I didn't like the situation so I shouted to Rhianna ‘keep pedalling' but one of the dogs just grabbed her off the bike.

"One started biting her arms while the other went for her legs. Someone in a car pumped their horn and they stopped but when she got up they just knocked her back down."

Rhianna wrestled free from the dogs' grip three times but each time they pounced on her again.

"These dogs were like bulls. You should have seen the size of their heads," said Mrs Grady.

"When I got to her I didn't know what to do. I just kept repeating to the dogs ‘be good, be good.' They let her go and I managed to get her to the house. Once we were inside, the rottweilers were peering in the living room window. We were so scared."

The child was taken to the safety of her relative’s home and an ambulance was called.

The girl was then taken to Ninewells Hospital, Dundee. She has since been admitted to the hospital and is being treated for injuries to her face and body. Her injuries are not life-threatening, however she has sustained a fractured jaw and requires plastic surgery.

Rhianna's grandmother Mrs Grady said: "Today has been a nightmare. I can still hear her screams,"

"You hear of this sort of thing happening but not on your own doorstep. She's in an awful mess. She's got bites at the back of her ears and will have to have her jaw wired.

"Her clothes were shredded and had to be cut off her when she arrived at the hospital. She has a bite under her chin and I'm just thankful they never got her throat or things could have been a lot worse."

"I've had alsatians all my life and I have a wee yorkie now but those were not dogs, they were machines."

Tayside Police said they had charged a 33-year-old woman in connection with the dog attack.

A spokesman said: "The woman has been charged under section three of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 for failing to keep the dogs under control and a full report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal."

Tayside Police would like to speak to the motorist who stopped at the time of the attack and also to any other persons who may have information relating to the incident.

Tayside Police can be contacted on 0300 111 2222 or by speaking to any police officer.

Re-home the dogs and neuter the owners.

Rottweilers and the so called "dangerous" dogs are only that way, mainly because of the owners. I know people who have these dogs and the dogs are just big softies. Bad owners usually mistreat their dogs so it's sometimes not surprising that they attack, unfortunately the wrong people. Pity they don't attack their owners instead. It's the owners who should be put down, however they will probably go out and get other dogs and mistreat them. People who are banned from keeping animals take no notice. Unfortunately animals are too easy to acquire.

I am an owner of the most beautiful, soft natured, brilliant with everyone rottweiller.

Itagirl said it right it is these horrible owners who make these dogs bad, lets not forget any dog that has been mistreated could turn at any moment doesnt just have to be rotties.

My friend has had rotties for years and never had any problems with them being vicious to anyone, all they did was give you a good slobbering.

my thoughts are with the poor girl who was attacked , hope she makes a full recovery.

My feelings are same as first poster.

I get angry that dogs attack and are put down, because they were not being looked after properly.

I have a Rotweiler who is 7yrs she is the most loveable thing you could hope to have. These dogs have obviously been allowed to run wild and as result will act as a pack. I never have my dog off the lead unless I am in an out of the way place. I also am aware of her power and always watch when my grandchildren are about. Even playing can result in a bruise or worse.

Large aggressive dogs like rottweilers should NEVER be allowed out on their own, the owner should be prosecuted with a heavy fine and even a jail sentence. How long is it going to take, and how many children are going be maimed or killed before the government does anything? It should be mandatory for dog owners of such large breeds to have their dogs trained, chipped, insured and put on a national database. It should also be mandatory for breeds known for their aggressiveness to be muzzled whilst on the streets. Personally, I would like to see the American style of dogcatcher, where they roam the streets and pick-up stray dogs and take them to a dog pound. The owner would then have to pay a fixed charge to get the dog back. That way owners would make sure their dogs are always on a leash.

I do agree with the above positive comments (ex littleian)but from my own terrifying experience, the police and local authorities need to take dog attacks seriously, not turn their backs because they're too lazy. They only act when something like this happens. Also, owners of big dogs who allow them to run off leash in public parks etc, remember your huge dog "playing" with a tiny one like mine could well break their back.Would you like an elephant jumping on top of you???

Maybe people shouldnt be so quick to judge the owners without knowing anything about them. I know for a fact that the dogs come from a good home and are very well looked after. There is no way that the dogs would ever be allowed to wander the streets unsupervised. No one feels worse about this tragic accident than the owner. Maybe in future people will find out the full facts before judging people they know nothing about.

I have a rottweiler who has just turned 1. He is the softest dog I have ever met. He has been raised around lots of children and dogs and he is so gentle with them. It is wrong to say that all big dogs are dangerous but I do agree with vindi62 and Aud25. I never leave my dog off the lead unless there is no one about, not because he is nasty but because he is so big and people are afraid of him.

It is stories like these that makes people afraid of big dogs and I have never seen a story about a so called 'gentle' dog attacking anyone, which I know happens.

I would do anything for my dog because he is like a best friend more than a pet.

    "Familyfriend".....

please do not spout your utter tripe on matters you obviosuly feel the need to lie about!

Those dogs as you well know were not from a "good home" and "looked after". They were kept in "sheds" in a back garden purely for breeding purposes, interbreeding may i add! As as for you saying "there is no way that the dogs would ever be allowed to wander the streets unsupervised" that is plain rubbish also, those same dogs attacked a grown man just a few months before!

If you think i know nothing of this attack, this family and these dogs then i shall warn you now, i know more than has been printed in the papers and i shall make all of it public knowledge if i have to!!!!
