Majority of Scots now oppose Megrahi's release

Exclusive poll for STV reveals shift in public opinion in year since Lockerbie bomber's release.

A majority of Scots now oppose the release of the Lockerbie bomber, an exclusive poll for STV News has revealed.

The Ipsos/Mori poll of 1013 people showed 54% disgreed with the decision to allow Abdelbaset al Megrahi to return home to Libya to die, with 35% agreeing.

It reveals a shift in public opinion compared with a poll carried by the same company, asking the same question, in August last year. The results then were closer, with 46% disagreeing with the decision and 42% agreeing.

Majority of Scots now oppose Megrahi's release

Megrahi is the only person convicted over the 1988 bombing of the Pan Am flight over Lockerbie that claimed the lives of 270 people. It comes as Scotland's First Minister defended the doctor whose prognosis led to the release of the Lockerbie bomber on compassionate grounds.

Megrahi was freed from Greenock prison on August 20 last year after his diagnosis with terminal prostate cancer. The bomber returned to jubilant scenes in Libya where he remains alive, despite being given a prognosis of three months to live.

Alex Salmond said Andrew Fraser, director of health at the Scottish Prison Service, followed a process of "complete integrity".

He said that no one should "seriously doubt either his professional or personal integrity".

Mr Salmond told BBC Radio Scotland's Good Morning Scotland programme that it was Dr Fraser's job to "compile and to present a prognosis based on the medical notes, that is the case records, from the range of people involved in Mr Megrahi's case".

He said: "The medical officer, in this case the head and director of medicine at the Scottish Prison Service, because of the importance of the case, is the person who gives the prognosis on the basis of all the available evidence that he or she can summon. That's the only way you can do it because if you did it in any other way you'd be reduced to having a contest between various doctors.

"The person responsible is the director of health for the Scottish Prison Service. This is a physician of great experience and I don't think anyone should seriously doubt either his professional or personal integrity."

Mr Salmond said the same procedure has been followed in all of the 40 cases reviewed in the last 17 years. During this time there have been four cases of people surviving beyond one year.

Mr Salmond said there was only one medical report on prognosis in existence - and that is the one produced by Dr Fraser.

He added: "Obviously people are going to have a range of views about the rights and wrongs of the decision that we made in the case of Mr Megrahi.

"All we ask people to do is to accept it was a decision that was made in good faith following the due procedures that we have under the legislation and under the tenants of Scots law."

The Scottish Government released the results of a poll it had commissioned on Thursday. It did not ask for the public's opinion on the decision but did reveal that most Scots believe it was correct that the decision to release the prisoner was made in Scotland and that the SNP administration was right to turn down American requests to attend a senate inquiry.

I find this hard to believe. It is completely at odds with my experience.

Who did they poll and what was the wording? And was the wording the same as the last poll?

Ok, I have found the wording which is presented below:

"On Friday, it will be one year since the Scottish Justice Secretary, Kenny MacAskill, announced the release of the man convicted of the 1988 bombing of the Pan Am aeroplane over Lockerbie in which 270 people died. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the decision to release him? Do you…"

The respondent is then asked to say whether they, strongly agree, tend to agree, neither agree, nor disagree, tend to disagree, or strongly disagree.

For the record, there is no mention of compassionate release in the question. I expect had that word been used then the results would have been different.

Given that Megrahi was "compassionately released" and not "released", I would say the Poll is worthless and hardly surprising.

One might conclude that this poll was engineered by STV. Shame on you.

I was disgusted with the stv reporter on tonights scotland today informing us intially of the poll results and then going on to insult the scottish people by agreeing with the american man who described us as cheap. I have seen the many polls in recent days saying that 75% of scots agree with Kenny Macaskill's decision why hasnt that reported on your news programme.

    these polls are made up

I for one like, many others, do not think that this man should have been allowed home to die and i think that Kenny MaCaskill should now resign from his position.

Likewsie the medical experst who gave him the advice should also resign as he deliberetly set aside the fact that Megrahi had no treatment, chemotherapy etc, and if he had refused it here, then he should have been kept in prison. He has FORCED this goverment by refusing this treatment, knwoing that he would be allowed home to die, a decsion which is despicable.

If this man is totally innocent, like many think, then why did he drop his appeal days before he was released.

Any right minded person who knew they were totally innocent of this atrocious crime would have fought to the end to clear their name, instead this man had dropped his appeal because he was promised that if he did, he would be sent home. Its a disgrace that he was allowed to drop this appeal on the promise to be sent home.

The Scottish goverment are a disgarce in this fiasco and MaCaskill and SPS medical advisor should resign in respect of this matter.

A year later and this man still lives. Did he give any compassion to the people killed in this atrocious incident? No he didnt, and likewise he should have remained where he was and if necessary his family brought over here to be with him in his last dying days.

This goverment of ours is SOFT and this fiasco has proved this.

This man Megrahi should have stayed in prison, died in prison and then sent home, paid by his goverment.

I for one know where my vote WONT be going at the next scottish elections and likewise many other will probably do the same.

    I can't agree with you.

If I were dying from cancer I think I'd rather spend my final days with my family than carrying on an appeal.

That can be done and my name cleared after I have died.

Whether you agree or not with the decision. If you actually read up on the "evidence" used at trial you also would doubt the conviction.

I'd be interested to know who you consider is worth your vote?

Will it be a party that starts illegal wars, broadens the gap between rich and poor, lines the pockets of big business at the expense of the taxpayer with PFI, hands back several billion £ to Westminster when they were in govt? Will you vote Labour?

    Can you justify this choice?

There are a number of people (especially in the London based media) who disagree with this decision. The simple truth is that they disagree with the fact that someone in Scotland made it and not someone in London. It doesn't matter what the decision was, they would have disagreed with it and been, "outraged." An interesting fact is that this law was passed by last tory government in 1993. The majority of Scottish mps voted against it but it was passed by an use of an English tory majority. Maybe, William Hague, Cameron etc should be angry with their own party (and themselves) for forcing such a badly thought out piece of legislation on the Scottish people.

Polls. If you in the 15th century had polled whether people thought the earth was flat you'd get an overwhelming "yes", even though an equally overwhelming scientific consensus had long dropped that idea.

Much more interesting would it be, if you polled among people, that actually had done something to investigate the issue.

    We talk about conviction where

    - the primary prosecution witness in secrecy received millions of USDs.

    - that witness gave numerous early statements which does not at all match Megrahi and pointed out other suspected persons

    - the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission stated that an absolutely critical conclusion in the judges' verdict had "no reasonable basis"

    - the same SCCRC referred the case back to re-trial

    - the alledged bomb timer fragment later was tested never to have been in near an explosion

    - a number of prosecution witness has been discredited and found to be incompetent to give evidence in trials, because of other trials now known to result in false convictions

    - another accused, Mr. Fhimah, originally claimed to be absolutely essential in the crime, was acquitted?

The list is very long. But, how many of those asked in the poll have ever done something to look into the facts?

Did you know that Dr Jim Swire's most treasured possession is a Christmas card from Megrahi?

Please show respect for the families of the victims of this muslim terrorist and remember he is a convicted mass murderer and always will be.

I stand shoulder to shoulder with my friends in NY who are against the building of hate for muslims, hussain obama will be like mohammed salmond out of power very soon.

Make no mistake muslims have no respect for christians or any other religion, as a well respected British politician said "islam is a wicked and evil religion", most agree with that statement.

Here is what was said by two American firefighters who helped in the mass muslim terrorist attack in NY who are also against the mosque building, "On 9/11 I realised what islam is about", the other said not all muslims are terrorists but all terrorists are muslim.

    I rest my case.

Racist...I will not even answer that apart from it is the lefts favorite word but as it is abused by immigrants so much especially when they do not get what they want.

Britain wants no more third world and certainly no more muslim immigrants, you will find the majority agree and support my views, the snp are so desperate for votes that they would be aswell changing their name to the scottish muslim party as they do not represent white born and bred, infact they would wipe out christians and replace them with muslims, that will never EVER happen and people will not vote snp, the party will finish and break in two after May, muslims and muslim pondering has destroyed the snp.

Scotland's Compassionate Release law is FLAWED!

You don't grant compassionate release to RADICAL ISLAMIC MASS MURDERING TERRORIST PIGS!!!

Kenny MacAskill and those who support his decision are idiots and cowards! They can't give a reasonable explanation as to why you would let a mass murderer free. MacAskill should resign along with his supporters in Parliament. It looks like there was fraud with the medical evaluations by some involved.

    @American

Where is this fraud on the medical evaluations? Do not believe your Senators, no Libyan sponsored medical evaluations were used in this decision. That is a falsehood.

If you really want justice, ask your Govt what really happened. Ask them why Libya wasn't suspected at all until Iraq invaded Kuwait, and the Allies needed Iran's help to sort out Saddam in Gulf War I. Suddenly attention moved away from Iran and Syria and moved to Libya. How convenient.

I detest and condemn terrorism of any kind. Including Governmental terrorism.
