Firefighters have rescued six people from a blaze in a tenement building in Glasgow.
Strathclyde Fire and Rescue was called to a fire in a basement of a four-storey tenement building in Albert Drive at around 2.25am on Monday.
By the time firefighters arrived two people have already jumped from the upper floors to escape the thick black smoke.
At the height of the incident 35 firefighters fought the blaze.
A fire service spokesman said: “Crews from Polmadie Community Fire Station were quickly on the scene.
“On arrival the fire crews were faced with a chaotic scene, with a fierce fire within the basement and a number of residents shouting for help at the windows of their flats in the upper floors as thick black smoke entered their flats from the fire below.
“The incident commander immediately sent firefighters wearing Breathing apparatus with main firefighting water jets to tackle the fire in the basement, battling through intense heat and smoke to find and extinguish the fire whilst other firefighters rescued the residents from their flats using fires service ladders.
“Due to the intensity of the fire and the number of flats involved the incident commander requested more resources, with fire engines attending from Calton, Castlemilk and Yorkhill Community Fire Stations.”
Ambulance crews were also in attendance and dealt with casualties suffering with a range of injuries caused by smoke and jumping from the upper floors.
Strathclyde Fire and Rescue's assistant chief officer Robert Scott said: "Basement fires are notoriously difficult to deal with due to the enclosed nature of the area on fire, and the build up of heat and smoke, firefighters have to call upon all of their training and expertise to tackle such fires successfully."
The fire service confirmed a joint investigation by Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Incident Research and Investigation Section and Strathclyde Police would now be launched.
Strathclyde Police have also closed a section of Albert drive to allow firefighters to continue their operations in safety.
