Dunblane 'thrilled' to welcome golden boy Andy Murray home

Dunblane's 8000 residents are preparing for the biggest homecoming their streets have ever seen ahead of Andy Murray's heroic return on Sunday.

Thousands more fans are planning a trip to the small cathedral town to join Murray's family and friends in celebrating the 25-year-old's Olympic Gold medal and first Grand Slam win.

The newly crowned US Open champion will arrive in an open-topped bus at 12 noon.

"I can't wait to get back to Dunblane to where it all began and share my US Open victory with everyone and thank them for all the support," said Murray.

"It's definitely going to be emotional, but it's a very special place for me."

The tennis star is due to arrive at Claredon Place in the centre of Dunblane at 12 noon before going on a walkabout up Perth Road to Beech Road, along High Street and stopping at his own Olympic Golden Postbox before continuing up High Street to Fourways Roundabout and into the tennis courts at Dunblane Sports Club.

At 13.30 Murray will be take part in a short Set4Sport activity session with his mother Judy before heading to the Golf Club car park to address the crowds at Central FM's roadshow stage.

A media conference will then take place before the Grand Slam winner gets to enjoy some time with friends and family.

Stirling Area Commander Superintendent Gordon Dawson said: "This is a unique event and we anticipate large numbers of people will turn up to see Andy Murray.

"There will be disruption to traffic and our advice is to plan your journey and to allow extra time for it. We encourage those attending to take direction from stewards along the route.

"I would also remind motorists that we will close the Perth Road from Claredon Place to the Four Ways roundabout north ad south bound to ensure that everyone gets a chance to safely see Andy.

"This will cause disruption particularly between 12 noon and 5pm and diversion signs will be in place."

Limited parking will be available in nearby schools including Dunblane Primary School, Dunblane High School and Newton Primary School.

"We're so thrilled that Andy's coming," said Stirling Provost Mike Robbins, who will be Andy's host and deliver a welcome on behalf of the whole Stirling area.

"It's always a pleasure to welcome him back, but this time, of course, it's extra, extra special. I visited local schools the morning after his US Open triumph, and everyone was just buzzing. The one thing the children wanted was the chance to say 'well done', and now we will all be able to do just that."
