Fat nation: why one in 12 Scottish primary pupils is obese

STV News can reveal on Tuesday that Scotland's 14 health boards are having to invest hundreds of thousands of pounds in beds capable of carrying patients weighing up to a belt-busting 72 stone.

Those are the bald facts surrounding Scotland's obesity epidemic - and the problem is feeding through to our nation's children.

1 - Scotland is the second fattest nation in the world - only exceeded in expanding girth by the USA.

2 - Obesity claims an average of nine lives every day across the country - with Scotland's health services facing a £175m-a-year bill for treating conditions related to the problem - such as high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes.

3 - The cost to Scottish society as a whole is estimated by the Scottish Government to be in excess of £457m-a-year.

4 - According to figures from ISD Scotland - part of NHS National Services Scotland, one in five children in primary one is classified as overweight. Around 8% are classified as obese, while 3.9% - one in every 25 children aged four and five - was found to be severely obese.

5 - Marks and Spencer have introduced school uniforms that go up to the equivalent of a woman's size 18 to cater for overweight school pupils.

6 - The Scottish Government estimate that by 2030, the number of people with type 2 diabetes will almost double to 150,000.

7 - Health bosses at NHS Lothian have spent tens of thousands of pounds on equipment to deal with massively obese patients - including special super-size body bags.

8 - A former private hospital - the Golden Jubilee in Clydebank - is to be transformed in to a specialist clinic in a bid to battle the obesity crisis.  It will carry out around 60 gastric band procedures next year for patients in the west of Scotland.

9 - In total, 229 people in the NHS Lothian area had obesity listed as a cause of death on their death certificates in the past five years.

10 - The issue isn't just confined to Scotland's people - it has spread to our pets too. Figures from the PDSA show that dogs in Scotland are the fattest in the UK, with 37% overweight compared to a national average of 35%.
