Two bodyboarders were swept up to 300 metres out to sea at Banff after getting into difficulties in strong currents.
Coastguards rushed to the scene and rescued a 13-year-old and a 36-year-old about 1pm on Friday after receiving a 999 call.
Members of the public had tried to help the pair, who were wearing wetsuits, by throwing a life ring but were unable to reach them due to high winds.
Two RAF helicopters were scrambled along with Banff Coastguards to help the pair. Both were returned to the beach after 40 minutes in the water.
They were checked over by paramedics and then airlifted by the RAF helicopter to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
Hector Sutherland, Aberdeen Coastguard watch manager said: "We are urging all visitors during the summer to our coastline to be extra careful when undertaking such activities.
"Beware what the action of wind on tide can have, and make sure that you carefully read the local weather forecast before setting out. We would also like to thank the rescue units who responded so promptly to our call."
