Darts: Inverness scoops a supersized sportsman

Inverness is getting set to welcome a sportsman of epic proportions.

On the 25th of August 15 times world champion Phil 'The Power' Taylor will make an appearance at the Inverness Ice Centre.

Darts has grown massively in popularity over the last 20 years and is now one of the biggest sports in the UK and the greatest exponent that the game has ever seen will show the North just how good he really is.

Phil is the reigning PDC World Champion having beaten Australian Simon Whitlock in London at the beginning of January. After winning his first World Title in 1990 he has gone on to rule the game for the last 20 years and at the age of 50 doesn’t look like giving up his crown anytime soon.

Phil said about coming to Inverness “I remember being in Inverness back in the early 90’s not long after winning my first world championship but is was such a long time ago I don’t have many recollections of the trip so I am hoping that being here will bring back some of the memories and let me see how the place has changed and grown since it became a city.

"There is a great bill for the night with the two best women in the world along with your own John Henderson from Aberdeen but I am especially looking forward to playing Ted Hankey in the final match of the evening as Ted was the BDO World Champion in 2009 and as I play in the PDC set up it be very interesting to see how we fair against each other.”

The evening begins with Anastasia Dobromyslova playing Deta Hedman which is followed by Aberdeen’s John Henderson taking on Mark Webster, himself a former BDO World Champion in 2008, before the main event of Taylor versus Hankey.

Gordon Morison who is promoting the event in conjunction with Inverness Ice Centre said “It’s a real coup for us to get Phil to come all the way up to Inverness and even more exciting to have a PDC v BDO playoff.

"We dipped our toe in the water back in May with our first darts night when we had players like Raymond van Barneveld and James Wade playing at the Ice Centre and after the reception these guys received it gave us the confidence to go for the best in the world.

"The atmosphere in May was electric and I think that when Taylor comes on the stage it will raise the roof. I really can’t wait to for it to come round and be part of this once in a lifetime experience.”
