Detectives have interviewed the serial killer Peter Tobin about alleged sexual assaults in the west of Scotland dating back to the 1960s.

The 63-year-old was detained at Edinburgh Prison on Wednesday and taken to the city's St Leonard's Police Station.

He was questioned for most of the day by officers from Operation Anagram, the nationwide inquiry which was launched by Strathclyde Police after Tobin murdered the Polish student Angelika Kluk in Glasgow in 2006.

Police believed Tobin had killed before. The inquiry led to the discovery of the bodies of Vicky Hamilton and Dinah McNicol at Tobin's former house in Margate in November 2007.

The officer who launched Anagram, Detective Superintendent David Swindle said: "Yesterday's interview was in relation to Tobin's suspected involvement in serious sexual crime in Scotland and was also in an effort to establish the truth about his possible criminal acitivities which have been the subject of continued media speculation.

"The outcome of yesterday's interview, conducted under Scottish powers, is being reported to the Crown Office in Scotland.

"A Sussex Officer attached to the UK wide Operation Anagram was present throughout the interview, this joint working between UK Forces has been a significant feature of Operation Anagram which still continues to examine the life of the serial killer Peter Tobin."

The interview came as police called off the search of a property in Brighton where Tobin used to live. They said searches there and at another property in East Sussex had failed to uncover evidence linking Tobin to any further crimes.
