Firefighters have been pumping water from businesses while roads across Scotland have been closed after heavy overnight rain caused flooding.

Fire crews were seen at Atholl Guest House, in Perth's Marshall Place which was closed for a time on Wednesday morning, pumping water through a hosepipe from the basement of the building.

And in the city's South Street, another fire crew were in attendance at the defunct Exel restaurant.

Residents told STV News that it appeared that water was also being removed from a pub and a hotel in the city by fire crews.

Flash warnings of heavy rain have been issued by the Met Office for large parts of Aberdeenshire, Moray, Tayside, Fife, Lanarkshire, Clackmannanshire and the Lothians.

Persistent and heavy rain saw around 15mm fall within three hours in some places and as much as 35mm was expected overall in others.

In Aberdeenshire the B999 south of Potterton has been badly affected by standing water, as has the B9077 Bridge of Dee to Maryculter road.

Marshall Place in Perth was closed between Edinburgh Road and James Street as fire crews and council staff worked to clear the street.

Even when it reopened, cars were aquaplaning on part of the road as they splashed through several inches of water.

And elsewhere, the slip road from the A85 on to M90 Friarton Bridge was closed for a time during rush hour.

Liz Smith, the Conservative MSP for Mid-Scotland and Fife, has praised the emergency services for their work during the flooding which hit Perth on Wednesday morning

She said: "I would like to pay tribute to the emergency services and council representatives who worked to assist those affected by the flooding which has hit Perth.

"In my capacity as MSP for the area, I stand ready to do everything I can to assist those residents who have been affected."
