Heavy rainfall overnight is causing traffic chaos across parts of the country.

Flash warnings of heavy rain have been issued by the Met Office for large parts of Aberdeenshire, Moray, Tayside, Fife, Lanarkshire, Clackmannanshire and the Lothians.

Persistent and heavy rain saw around 15mm fall within three hours in some places and as much as 35mm expected overall in others.

Motorists have been advised to take extra care due to a large amount of road surface water.

And the Met Office has warned of heavy rainfall in the Lothians, Borders and south west Scotland for the remainder of Wednesday.

In a message on their Twitter page, the Met Office wrote: "Warning of Heavy Rain for SW Scotland, Lothian & Borders valid from 1215 Wed 21 Jul to 2100 Wed 21 Jul."

On the M90 the slip road from the A85 Dundee Road was closed southbound due to flooding at junction 11, Friarton Bridge. Diversions were put in place via Kinfauns flyover. However, the road reopened shortly after 9am.

Elsewhere in Perth, Marshall Place was closed both ways due to flooding between the Edinburgh Road and James Street in the city centre. The road reopened at around 8.30am.

Fire engines had attended at the road to pump floodwater from the basement of a bed and breakfast in the street.

In Aberdeenshire the B999 south of Potterton has been badly affected by standing water, as is the B9077 Bridge of Dee to Maryculter road.
