Loyal dog who spent eight days lying beside dead owner loses fight for life

Jack Russell: Faithful pet passed away 'peacefully'.

A loyal pet Jack Russell who spent eight days lying beside his dead owner has died.

The devoted dog, aptly named Jack, was discovered extremely emaciated and dehydrated by his pensioner owner's side earlier this month.

He was being cared for at the Arbroath home of Ian Robb, founder of Help for Abandoned Animals Charity.

But Mr Robb said the animal's kidneys had started to fail and a vet decided that he had to be put down shortly before 12pm on Thursday.

He said: "We are so disappointed but his spirit was broken after what he had been through. We saw a deterioration on Wednesday and knew it was only a matter of days. But with him not having food and water for so long it was very hard. He passed away peacefully. We've had so much support and people had phoned us from all over the UK."

The pet was found after worried friends visited the woman's remote countryside home at Kinnell, near Arbroath, Angus, when they had not heard from her in over a week before finding her dead.

She has not been identified but it is understood she died of natural causes.

Jack was rushed to a local veterinary practice, where he has spent a few days undergoing intensive treatment before being cared for by Mr Robb.
