Two tower blocks which dominated the skyline in Kincardine have been demolished for a new housing development.
The empty blocks at Sandeman and Kincardine Court were felled in seconds on Sunday in front of a cheering crowd.
Residents who live within the exclusion zone were evacuated from their homes between 8-9.30am as contractor Safedem Ltd carried out the spectacular demolition.
People were advised to avoid the area as dust from the collapsing buildings filled the air.
Councillor Brian Goodall, chairman of Fife Council's housing and communities committee added: "One of the Council's big priorities is increasing access to housing and the redevelopment of the area will play a big part in delivering on that priority in the next few years.
“The demolition of these two blocks of flats is an exciting and significant part in the redevelopment of the area.
"I know Safedem have been working very hard over the past few months to ensure the needs of those people affected on the day are catered for in the best way possible."
William Sinclair, from Safedem Ltd, said: "I would like to take this opportunity to thank the residents of Kincardine for their kind co-operation during our preparations.”
The flats had been a problem for the council as most had been lying empty for a number of years. The Council took the decision to tackle all long-term voids through its Estate Action Programmes in 2004.
It then gave its approval to demolish the flats and redevelop the area in March 2007 and tenants have been rehoused since - some to temporary accomdodation at the other remaining block at Ramsay Court, or away from the area.
The site will now be developed in three phases consisting of 65 social rented houses and private housing. Phase three will see Ramsay Court demolished.
