Plans for a "millionaire's playground" in Highland Perthshire have been turned down to the delight of campaigners who feared it would ruin the landscape.

The £1.3billion scheme for Dall Estate included two 18-hole golf courses, a luxury hotel and an underwater restaurant at Loch Rannoch.

More than 1000 objections were raised by locals and environmentalists.

Council planners found the development was at odds with national policies designed to protect rural areas and it was rejected by councillors in Perth this afternoon.

Andrew Fairbairn, of Woodland Trust Scotland, said: "Woods like these are extremely rare in Scotland making up just one percent of Scotland's land area - we have very little left.

"Around 400 hectrares were under threat there and its the biggest case the trust has had UK-wide to deal with, so we are really delighted at the outcome."

And local campaigner Bob Benson added: "The relief is phenomenal - and it makes the developer having to think very carefully about further proposals.

"It also makes us think a lot about the initiatives we need to take in the area, and about a high level of protection for Loch Rannoch itself."
