Your MP for Edinburgh East: Sheila Gilmore

Labour MP Sheila Gilmore has been chosen as representative for Edinburgh East.

Sheila Gilmore has retained the seat for Labour, with incumbent MP Gavin Strang retiring after over 35 years in office. The area has been safely Labour since the 1945 by-election.

Ms Gilmore was born in Aberdeen and grew up in Edinburgh. She has four children.

Originally a teacher, she went on to study law and worked for a solicitor’s firm in Edinburgh dealing with people receiving legal aid. She focussed on family law and represented clients in cases involving divorce, domestic abuse, child protection and adoption.

She was involved in setting up the Edinburgh Women’s Rape Crisis Centre in 1979.

Ms Gilmore was elected as Labour Councillor for Moredun in 1991. She was appointed Convenor for Housing in 1999 as a result of her campaigning in Moredun to get improvements done to the houses in the area, with many of them lacking basics such as central heating and double glazing. She stood down from the council in 2007.
