Drivers stranded as snow and weather chaos spreads across Scotland

STV

Drivers have been stranded and homes left without power as snow, rain and high winds caused chaos across Scotland.

On Monday night, the A9 was affected by a light covering of snow, while some drivers were forced to dig their cars out from a foot of snow close to Denny in Stirlingshire.

Central Scotland Police said 10 trucks were stranded for several hours after being caught on the southbound carriageway of the M90 in three inches of snow. Snow ploughs cleared the problems in the early hours of Tuesday.  One truck jack-knifed on the A9, near Huntly.  There have also been reports on Tuesday morning that lorries are stranded near Auchterarder.

Power has been affected across the country, with thousands affected in North Ayshire and hundreds in the village of Kinbuck near Dunblane.

Police said Wanlockhead in Lanarkshire also experienced a covering of snow, but roads were still open. Meanwhile, roads around East Kilbride were treacherous with drivers describing conditions as the worst they have seen in this year.

IN DETAIL

Overnight, the north of Scotland was worst affected, with temperatures dropping to -5C in Cairnwell, near Braemar. Traffic Scotland put out severe weather warnings on the A92 Tay Road Bridge, the A898 Erskine Bridge and A87 Skye Bridge.

In Fife, the High Street in Dysart was closed after a wall collapse and the B940 at Pitscottie were closed because of flooding.

The Beacon leisure centre in Burntisland has also been closed due to flooding caused by the adverse conditions. Members had to be led out of the gym and swimming pool after water rushed in at around 3pm. Around 10 firefighters used pumps to bring the flooding under control, after four feet of water built up in the basement of the centre.

In Aberdeen, localised flooding has caused problems in the city centre.

Forecasters warned that many areas of the country were likely to see more snow over the rest of Tuesday and into Wednesday. Areas especially badly affected included higher ground from Dumfriesshire to the Borders and Lothian with drifting and blizzard conditions liable to block many roads, in gale to severe gale northeast winds.

Further north, they warned of up to 10cm of snow on higher ground with local drifts of up to 15cm on higher ground.  Heavy rain has been falling over lower ground, bringing the possibility of localised flooding.
