Death crash: Victim David Mulholland

The mother of a tragic teenager killed when his friend crashed a car on a bend near Cupar has hit out at the sentence handed down to the driver.

David Mulholland, pictured above, was killed in a car crash near Cupar in November 2008.

He was a passenger in a car which hit another vehicle on a bend and careered off the road.

The driver, 19 year old Paul Robinson, admitted causing death by careless driving at Cupar Sheriff Court.

On Thursday he was sentenced to 120 hours of community service and banned from driving for two years.

Now Pauline Mulholland, David's mother, has said they want to appeal the sentence handed down to Robinson.

She said: "We want to definitely get that changed. I just don't think two years is long enough. That's someone that's lost their life.

"Yes, it may be an inconvenience to you to lose your licence for two years, but that's only two years."

Pauline knew her son, and Paul Robinson, took risks on the road. A week before he was killed, 17-year-old David wrote-off his own car in a high-speed crash.

She added: "They were racing, so one was as bad as the other, and their driving fell well below standard that night.

"That very day David died he told me that he had learned his lesson, as we passed the scene he was white and when I asked him what was wrong he went 'I was lucky'.

"They just never learned from that night."

Now Pauline is hoping the tragedy will help to educate other young drivers. A powerful Ford Escort David bought to do-up is to be used as part of the campaign.

She said: "I want to take that to shows, I don't want the young boys to give away their cars and stop making them sporty and look nice, but just drive them safe.

"You don't have to drive at 70, 80, 90 miles per hour, stick to the speed limits and have your nice cars."

what can one say a life gone so young and foolish behavior. The punishment did not fit the crime but what would prison do.Perhaps they should now think of bringing back the birch for crimes such as this.
