A couple whose car was destroyed when part of the gable end of a block of flats in Perth collapsed on to it have told STV News how they learned of the destruction.

Gareth Coutts, 26, said he and his partner were awoken between midnight and 1am when they heard a loud banging outside.

Shortly after he and partner Claire Allison, both pictured above, discovered their Vauxhall Corsa had been written-off by masonry that had fallen four storeys on to their car.

Speaking outside the flats in Perth's Tay Street, Gareth told STV News: "I had a look out of the window that looks over the graveyard behind the flat and thought it might have been a tree falling.

"Then I got a phone call about a quarter of an hour later from Tayside Police asking me to move my car because some masonry had fallen on it.

"I met a policeman halfway down the stairs and told him I'd been asked to move my car - he told me I had no chance because of the damage.

"We are gutted - but at least we weren't in the car at the time.

"It isn't that old a building so you wouldn't expect this to happen."

IN DETAIL:

Gareth's partner Claire, 24, added: "The family that got moved out just moved in in January. It is a couple and their baby.

"The man phoned the fire brigade - they didn't seem to think it was too serious until they got here.

"Luckily it is just the car that is damaged and no-one was hurt."
