Compensation order for pair who beat up homeless man

Two men who carried out an unprovoked and violent assault on a homeless man after leaving an Edinburgh nightspot have been ordered to compensate their victim.

Homeless Bravo Bromfield was sitting on the street in the Cowgate area last July when David Hill, Michael Pritchard and their friend Derek Connelly attacked him.

At Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Thursday, 31-year-old Hill and 20-year-old Pritchard were ordered to carry out 200 hours community service and pay their victim £150 compensation each. Sentence on 30-year-old Connelly was deferred until he can be assessed for a Drug Treatment and Testing Order.

Fiscal depute Ruth Ross-Davies previously told the court: "The incident took place at around 7pm at the Cowgate, Edinburgh, when Connelly, Hill and Pritchard had left The Three Sisters pub and were making their way along the Cowgate.

"They came upon Mr Bromfield, a homeless person sitting in the Cowgate.

"There would appear to be no reason for Connelly, Hill and Pritchard setting about Mr Bromfield and punching him repeatedly on his head and his body.

"This incident was captured on CCTV and as a consequence Connelly, Hill and Pritchard were in due course traced by police officers and detained in relation to the matter."

Mr Bromfield was repeatedly punched by the trio and was left with bruising to his head and body, however, he declined medical treatment.

Next door neighbours, Connelly and Pritchard from Edinburgh's Barn Park and Hill, from Oxgangs Farm Gardens admitted the assault on July 31 last year. Sentence on the trio had been deferred at a previous hearing.
