A pensioner is celebrating her 90th birthday on Friday by a whitewater rafting to raise money for charity.

Gean Hodsdon will make the voyage on the River Tay near Perth in a bid to raise £5,000 for a water pump at a children's summer camp in Moldova.

Water for the camp, which caters for youngsters from poor families, currently has to be brought in by tanker.

The money for the pump will be given to Scottish charity Blythswood Care which helps poor families across Eastern Europe, Asia and Africa.

Gean, who is from Linlithgow in West Lothian, said: "I helped with the camps for many years and I loved being able to go out there and work with the children. However now I am less able to travel, but I still want to do something which will help.

"I am looking forward to the whitewater rafting and maybe even to ending up in the water."

A total of £645 has been raised towards the event.

On her page on the Just Giving website, she wrote: "On March 5, I will take on this challenge to raise money for the summer camp in Moldova. The camp lacks many basic facilities at present.

"The money raised will buy a water pump. At the moment water is carried into the camp on a tanker. Living conditions in Moldova are desperate for many families.

"The camps give children the opportunity to get away into the country and to experience fun, friendship and faith."
