Facing jail: Mark Devereaux

A man who infected his lover with the HIV virus will be sentenced for culpable and reckless conduct today.

Mark Devereaux was diagnosed with the virus in 1994 but went on to have unprotected sex with four different women.

The crimes took place between January 2003 and December 2008 when Devereaux had sex with his victims without telling them he had the disease.

One of his victims was later diagnosed with the virus when she was three months pregnant while three of his victims escaped infection.

At an earlier hearing, the 41 year-old from Dundee pleaded guilty to four counts of culpable and reckless conduct. He was also placed on the sex offenders' register and remanded in custody ahead of sentencing.

After the hearing, one of his victims, who is now 27, branded Devereaux "evil".

The woman, who had a year-long relationship with Devereaux in 2003, said: "He is extremely manipulative. I wasn't aware that he was putting my health at risk.

"I trusted him. Never in my worst nightmares could I have imagined him keeping something like the fact he was HIV positive from me."

Sentencing will take place at the High Court in Dumbarton.
