Two youths arrested in connection with the murder of a teenage Scots soldier have been released without charge.
Andrew Gibson, from Glasgow, died after he was allegedly attacked in a nightclub two weeks before Christmas.
The 19-year-old Scots Guardsman had been due to return for a brief holiday at his parents Freddy and Linda's home in Cumbernauld before heading to Afghanistan.
Mr Gibson, who had been in the Army for two years, was due to fly out to Afghanistan with his battalion in January.
He had travelled with friends from his base in Catterick, North Yorkshire, for a night out in Darlington's Esplanade nightclub where the attack took place at around 1am on 11 December.
He was left unconscious after suffering head injuries and was taken by ambulance to James Cook Memorial Hospital in Middlesbrough, but never recovered consciousness and died one week later.
Shortly after the incident, detectives arrested a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old for assault.
They were re-arrested on Friday on suspicion of murder but Durham Constabulary confirmed they had been released pending further inquires on Saturday.
After his death, Mr Gibson's parents released a statement through the police saying: "Andrew was our only child.
"He had wanted to be a soldier since he was 14 and he enjoyed every minute he was in the Army.
"Andrew had been looking forward to coming home for Christmas. After his leave, he would have been deployed to Afghanistan. He was really looking forward to that."
