Officials are continuing to monitor the slope at Bervie Braes in Stonehaven this weekend following fears of a landslip.

Aberdeenshire Council wrote to residents twice last week warning them to remain vigilant and be prepared to evacuate their properties at short notice.

On Friday another letter was issued after an inspection of the area showed that ground water levels had remained high.

The council stresses that it does not expect the situation to change in the short term and does not plan to contact residents over the weekend unless it is absolutely necessary to do so.

However an update is expected early next week.

The Braes form the coastal slopes that back the harbour and adjacent portions of the old town of Stonehaven. Local slips have been occurring in this area for many years.

A public road runs across the slope and approximately 65 houses are located at its base.

Aberdeenshire Council has been monitoring slope movements for over 15 years and some modest drainage measures have been implemented to minimise the risk of slope failure.

The council has agreed a preferred option for a permanent scheme to stabilise Bervie Braes which was chosen following an extensive consultation exercise with residents and has been estimated to cost in the region of £5.7million.

The council would require funding from Scottish Government to undertake such a scheme at Bervie Braes and has previously made an approach to ministers for funds.

The Scottish Government said it shares concerns about the stability of the Bervie Braes and is considering the council's proposals.
