Lord Carloway has been appointed the second most senior judge in Scotland.
The judge was in charge of the review of the law after the Cadder ruling by the UK Supreme Court.
He will take over as Lord Justice Clerk from Lord Gill who was recently made Lord President after being nominated by the First Minister.
He worked as an Advocate Depute from 1986 to 1989 before being appointed a QC in 1990.
In February 2000, he was made a judge and appointed to the Second Division of the Inner House in 2008.
Lord Carloway will take over his new role, with a salary of £206,857, immediately.
