Men across Scotland have been urged to get their fitness back on track by putting on their running shoes and taking part in a 10k race in Glasgow.
The Men's Health Forum Scotland has launched the fifth annual MHFS for Men which takes place on Father's Day, June 20, and hope to attract up to 5,000 entrants.
Real Radio presenter Mark Martin and MSP Andy Kerr braved the freezing temperatures to support the event, which they have both vowed to take part in.
Organisers hope to attract entrants of all abilities after more than 3,000 men, aged 15 to 83, took part in the run last year.
A survey of participants in last year’s event showed that by taking part in the MHFS 10k for Men, runners were much more aware of the importance of looking after their health.
When asked to rate their overall health on a scale from one (not at all healthy) to five (extremely healthy), participants rated themselves as being more healthy after they had completed the 10k. There was also a trend for reduction in weight and waist size seen across participants.
Mark Ward, national co-ordinator for the Men’s Health Forum Scotland, said: “It is not a competitive race, it is a race for everyone, so men of all ages, of all abilities. It doesn't matter whether you run, walk or jog. The important thing is to take part.
“Last year’s event was a great success. However we want men to come back again and encourage their friends and family members to undertake the challenge along with them. The buzz and excitement generated on the day is overwhelming, but it’s the health benefits of taking part in the event which make the whole process worthwhile.
“Men’s health in Scotland has historically had a poor record, but we at the Men’s Health Forum Scotland are committed to encouraging men to take responsibility for their health and also to help them to step forward and seek help in doing so.”
DJ Mark Martin said: “I’m really looking forward to taking part in the 2010 Men’s Health Forum Scotland 10K. Every runner has their own story and reasons for running this race; personally, I like a good challenge! 2010 is the start of a new decade and I think turning over a new leaf to get fit can only be a good thing.
"I'm looking forward to the different ways I'm going to train for this event, my rollerblades are going to be dusted off and a lot more five a side football with the Real Radio team will definitely be on the cards for helping me to prepare."
Labour MSP Andy Kerr said: “The MHFS 10K is more than a run it is chance for men of all ages shapes and sizes to set themselves a goal and to achieve that goal. The focus is how we can better look after ourselves live longer and be happier.
“Over the many years of taking part I have seen so many men running with brothers sons and friends with family cheering them on, many exceeding their own expectations. Preparing for the MHFS 10K is about taking those small and crucial steps towards better physical and mental health, it is about spirit and camaraderie and I look forward to the run every year.”
