Hogmanay revellers braved the sub-zero temperatures to enjoy the New Year celebrations around Scotland.

Heavy snow did force the cancellation of an event in Inverness after routes in and out of the city were blocked. A huge crowd had been expected in the city for the outdoor celebrations, which included The Red Hot Chilli Pipers and Peatbog Fairies.

Around 80,000 people welcomed in the New Year at the world-famous street party in Edinburgh, where temperatures dropped to -1.

In Aberdeen and Inverness temperatures fell to -2C, while in Glasgow where a crowd of 10,000 packed into George Square for the city's Hogmanay party, temperatures dipped to about -3C.

In Edinburgh, the Noisettes played at the Concert in the Gardens event where 80s favourites Madness welcomed in the bells. Indie rockers We Were Promised Jetpacks and rock band The Enemy were also among groups playing on the three stages of the street party.

The evening ended with a huge fireworks and laser display against the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle as the bells rang out at midnight. This was followed by a mass rendition of Auld Lang Syne.

Tickets for the enclosure at the Concert in the Garden had sold out, while sales for the other areas of the event sold well, organisers said.

Lothian and Borders Police thanked the public for ensuring that Edinburgh's Hogmanay celebrations passed smoothly with around 350 police officers patrolling Princes Street and the surrounding area.

The force said four arrests were made in the event arena, all for breach of the peace.

Temporary Deputy Chief Constable Mike McCormick said: "We have been delighted with the behaviour and attitude of revellers in Edinburgh this Hogmanay.

"Only four arrests were made by our officers on scene, and we would like to thank the public for helping to create a fun and memorable event for all concerned."

Deacon Blue headlined Glasgow's sell-out Hogmanay party, and a firework display over the City Chambers heralded in the New Year.

Alcohol carry-outs were banned from the city centre site for the first time, but drinks were available at bars in the area.

In Stirling, revellers welcomed in the New Year with a party on the castle esplanade, featuring singer Sandi Thom and X-Factor stars The MacDonald Brothers. At midnight, mass pipes and drums crossed the castle drawbridge beneath a fireworks display.

In Aberdeen, a fireworks display signaled 2010 and in the nearby seaside town of Stonehaven crowds were treated to a spectacular fireball parade.
