Robert Burns voted Greatest Scot

STV's Homecoming search for The Greatest Scot culminates in Robert Burns, in his 250th anniversary year

Robert Burns voted Greatest Scot

The Greatest Scot of all time is Robert Burns. STV viewers and online users around the world voted in their thousands for the Ayrshire Ploughman who narrowly outscored William Wallace, the great independence campaigner. The winner was announced on STV on St Andrew's night

The accolade comes in the Year of Homecoming,  a year that is already celebrating the 250th anniversary of Burns' birth in the simple thatched cottage in Alloway that you can still visit today.

Burns poetry and songs are known throughout the world. Not everyone who will sing the words of Auld Lang Syne at New Year will fully understand this hymn to friendship and good cheer, but many millions will sing it none the less.

The Burns section of the Greatest Scot series was introduced by Alex Norton, the actor who plays Detective Matt Burke in STV's long running crime series Taggart. Norton himself is a dab hand at Burns songs as he showed in his version of Green Grow the Rashes, O recorded earlier in the year for STV's Made in Scotland series.

The final order of the top ten was as follows: 1.Robert Burns 2. William Wallace 3. Sir Alexander Fleming 4.Jock Stein 5.David Tennant 6.Robert The Bruce 7.Andrew Carnegie 8.Sir William Alexander Smith 9.Billy Connolly 10.Alex Harvey.

Altogether, figures from the world of the arts were well represented, and while some of that may be attributable to recent history and television exposure, the final choice of Burns reflects his timeless appeal, despite a language which even to some modern day Scots is not that easy to follow.

So the year of Homecoming which began with a very special Burns supper in Alloway ends on St Andrew's Day with confirmation of Burns' very special position in Scottish hearts. What would he have made of it, one wonders? He would probably have taken a  generous dram and reminded us all that a man's a man for a' that.

Alan Clements, director of content at STV, said: "The search for our all-time favourite Scot has been a fantastic event and I'm sure the shortlist of nominees has caused much debate and discussion in Scotland and beyond. I'm thrilled that Robert Burns won the public vote in the end. He is a Scottish icon and absolutely worthy of the title Greatest Scot."

To honour the winner, STV will commission a piece of contemporary art by a Scottish artist, which will be donated to the nation. The full list of nominees is still available on STV's website.

What a disaster. This has been so stage managed that I'm angry about this 'greatest Scot sham'. My grandparents would have died to hear Eddie Reader murder her version of Burns' song. Rabbie Burns was a fantastic poet - the best one ever produced in Britian but we have totally made a fool of our Greatness in history with this nonsense. The categories have made this an anti climax for me - and everyone I've spoken too. Our country has become narrow minded. This shows sheer ignorance about Scottish greatness and the real blame falls on the Scottish education system. The world hails the other people on the list and again, no John Knox, no David Livingstone, no Mary Slessor (last 2 on bank notes).... and yet we still had an english woman on the list. Total 'mince'. Burns a great poet but a greater Scot than the Bruce? I think not. Narrow minded Scotland.

A golden opportunity lost for Scotland. This was a chance to balance out our history and set the record straight and take the view that the world takes of us - a nation with the finest inventors in the medical, engineering, and scientific fields ever. Never mind our outstanding thinkers who together have changed millions of peoples lives and impacted the world - not just Scotland. Even today we still benefit from these great people and who do we select... the predictable Burns. The greatest poet ever to come out of Great Britain obviously but not the greatest Scot. We already hail him annually and worship at his feet when are we going to see the world view of us and break the rut we are in with Burns. Here is his legacy - most young people canny sing his songs - just go ask them and they can't name another Scottish poet either. We have made Burns all in all. Now we ignore everyone else. Flat ending to a great TV series - pick his name up front and save some money the next time. Same old story and highlights our own ignorance of our own greatness for we are truly a great nation in our own standing having given world a mega impact. I'm sure our English neighbours are laughing at the predictable outcome. Not to diminish Burns' authority - the medical profession must be reeling at this. Some names on the list were an insult to our national heritage.

What a nonsense. So the guy wrote a few poems and a few songs. So did the Bay City Rollers - and i'm sure theres a few folk who hold them in just as high regard as Burns.

From a nation that produced some of the brightest minds in history, plus some true historical legends - the Scottish public (apparently) select a guy who's real contribution was insignificant in comparison.

Pretty embarrassing show. Production value was terrible. Guests were awful.

For a moment a had my head in my hands thinking Billy Connolly was going to win.

Rabbie isn't a bad choice, but many more deserving candidates in my book, and like others, many not on the list.

Stage managed so that Burns wins in HIS year, no James Watt etc. but still good to see Jock Stein and Alex Harvey getting some well deserved praise from the people, two great Scots who were overlooked in their lifetimes.

I am so glad this farce of a homecoming year is finally over .I am so fed up of hearing how wonderful we are ,nothing like blowing your own trumpet.Of course it was going to be Rabbie Burns winning in his anniversary year that was so predictable. He maybe was a great poet but surely not the greatest scot.It would be interesting to know how many people actually voted who live in Scotland.

Firstly i would just like to say that Robert Burns is a worthy winner of the greatest scot title.A truely memorable Scot. Admittedly however he was not my first choice, i voted for William Wallace who without a shadow of a doubt is the greatest scot. The only other nominees that can be mentioned in the same breath as him is robert burns and of course robert the bruce. Therefore i am not too disappointed that robert burns got the title. Despite this i have one or two major grievances about this vote. The fact that someone called david tennant. . . .yes david tennant struggling to remember who he is? Well he is Doctor Who in a rubbish series that no one even watches anymore, he has appeared on casanova in a 2 part series which at best could be described as okay, oh yeah and he has maybe appeared on top gear once or twice. Yes HE DEFINITELY DESERVES TO BE RANKED 5TH ABOVE ROBERT THE BRUCE.A man who arguably was the greatest king scotland has ever had and the man after william wallace who finished the job in uniting scotland to fight and actually win scotland's independance as a free nation. It is an insult to Robert the Bruce's memory that such an undeserving person could be ranked above such an iconic figure in scottish history. Aside from Robert the Bruce's tarnished name the fact that david tennant along with others could be ranked above billy connelly and sean connery two other scots who everyone knows is also an absolute joke. Maybe STV needs to reconsider how they conducted this vote as well as consider who actually voted because i am not the only one who has made these grievances clear.

The idea behind this series was fantastic - and it could have proved to be a real headline grabbing, debate prompting show. Instead it ended up being poorly presented, poorly edited, and having a very poor choice of names for people to choose from - why limit the number of people on the list to 35? I can think of about 10 further names off the top of my head which could have been on the list, and who have given the world far more than David Tennant ever has! I was looking forward to learning about some unsung heros and getting further insight into how the people of our Nation have changed the world. Instead we got presented a limited choice of greats mixed in with TV actors and ageing celebrities. What a shame.

No doubt that Burns was one of the greatest Scots, among many great Scots, but to my mind, the greatest of them all Was King Robert the Bruce, the man who freed Scotland from English tyranny. What is great about actors and other 'celebrities' zilch. They give themselves enough accolades anyway.

No surprise you'd vote for Burns George Fae Ayr. Obviously blinded to the achievements of so many real great scots by your attachment to you provincial hero.

The decision is a joke and shows how little the STV watching / Daily Record buying public really know about Scots history, when they latch on to the guy they've basically been told to vote for by our moronic SNP government.

My concern with the series is twofold:

How is it possible to assess the relative merits and contributions of individuals as diverse as, for example, Billy Connolly and James Clark Maxwell and then rank one "greater" than the other?

Secondly, I agree with Jings and would use the omission of John Knox, David Livingstone and Mary Slessor, and no category that would naturally include them, as further evidence of an anti-religious, particularly anti- Christian bias in the Scottish media.

We seem incapable of assessing the worth and contribution of historical figures without revealing our prejudices.

Well the voters can congratulate themselves again for falling in to the overtly nationalist trap by voting for Burns, a philandering womaniser, followed fairly closely by a TV actor - the mind boggles!!!! Only one significant inventor, Fleming, made it to the top ten, a man responsible for saving millions of lives. Oh well, this will undoubtedly lead to employees of the Scottish Executive adding yet another Bank Holiday to the already large number they receive (which includes St. Andrews Day) Isn't it nice to know we can afford to be so generous!

Oh My God what a disaster this show was. The election shows are more entertaining than this, what a poor offering when you consider we were supposed to be celebrating The Greatest Scots achievements. It only goes to prove we are more interested in celebrity than meaningful contribution. Yes Rabbie Burns made a tremendous contribution to identifying the scots but the greatest I don't think so identity is one thing substance another. this quickie show won no points with me especially when Billy Connolly was suggested as the greatest Scot ever, now that really was a joke. STV you crashed and burned with this damp squib BIG TIME

    What a Farce ! I totally agree with Streeken, David Tennant above the Bruce ? The very fact that he, Connelly, Connery who don't even live in Scotland,and the rest of these celebrities, were on the list at all, in itself is ludicrous;

so, although he was'nt the greatest scot, I'm glad Burns won, instead of Alex Norton's choice of Billy Connelly, UNBELIEVABLE !

Well - I was pleased with the result. I'd have settled for Wallace or Burns as the winner. The challenge now for STV is to take this forward to the next stage. How do we get a better understanding of Scottish 'heroes' through to our children and grandchildren - through schools, colleges, universities and the media. How about some STV drama/film commissions to create and tell memorable and powerful stories of our heroes. We've seen it with Braveheart and more recently the 'englishman' Chales Darwin. Time to use the power of the media to sell Scotland to a more global audience?

William Wallace fought and died for his country in a bid to free us from tyranny and oppression. He led the way for our nation to win its freedom.

What did Robert Burns do? He wrote a few poems.

This result is a joke. No disrespect to Burns at all but greatest ever Scot? You're having a laugh.

Well, who'd a thunk it? The bold Rabbie wins in his anniversary year. While I think Burns was a great poet et al, I really do NOT think he was the Greatest Scot! But then again, what did we expect? J K Rowling was among the nominees and as much as I like the lady and her HP books etc, she is English. Joseph Lister was also English and being in Scotland for a long time doesn't make them Scots. This was the perfect time to vote for a LIVING great like Sir James Whyte Black who has helped MILLIONS of people - and probably saved a few million too - with his medicinal discoveries. No, this was a GREAT opportunity wasted.

BTW folks - A Man's a Man for A' That! The definition of "Awe" is "wonder or admiration". Rabbie is saying ALL, hence the apostrophe

I disagree with the choice of Robert Burns. Greatest Scot? No way!!! Literature/arts in no way qualifies as greatest! Sir William Wallace, King Robert the Bruce and King Kenneth MacAlpin...these are your greatest Scots!!!

Leaders and shakers. Tuff as nails! I wish there were more Great Scots just like them alive today. They kicked butt and took names later.

    So is that it?

    What happens now?

How about asking for the renaming of the airport at Prestwick, which is 5 miles from Robert Burns place of birth in Alloway, as "The Robert Burns International Airport" like we do every year at this time. Let's go the full hog this time!

http://www.gopetition.com/...rport.html And when you're talking about innovation and patriots just remember that a great number of these men and women on the Icon List came from within 50 miles of The Robert Burns International Airport.
