Football refs back campaign against domestic violence

Football officials at league and cup football matches in Scotland will wear white ribbons this weekend to support a campaign against domestic violence.

The move comes as police begin a drive to try and clampdown on domestic abuse over Christmas time. Adverts promoting the campaign will also appear in programmes for Scottish Premier League fixtures on Saturday.

The month-long campaign will be backed up by robust enforcement by police. Assistant Chief Constable Iain Livingstone from Lothian and Borders Police is spokesman on domestic issues for the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland.

He said: “We are determined to identify offenders and bring them to justice. Domestic abuse affects numerous people throughout Scotland regardless of age or gender and it is totally unacceptable.

“There is never any excuse for resorting to violent behaviour against your partner and domestic abuse, whether physical, emotional or financial will not be tolerated in Scotland.”

Police plan to respond rapidly to domestic abuse incidents and there will also be strict enforcement of bail conditions during the campaign which runs from December 1 to January 31.
