Scottish actor Alan Cumming has attended a ceremony at Buckingham Palace to receive an OBE from the Princess Royal.

The star has being honoured for services to film, theatre and the arts and for his work as a gay rights campaigner.

Alan Cumming, who was born in Perthshire, has had a long and varied career and has starred in several blockbuster movies including the Spy Kids trilogy, the X-Men sequel X2 and the James Bond film Goldeneye.

His TV appearances include Sex And The City, Frasier and Third Rock From The Sun.

He has also an established stage actor, making an international name for himself after playing the Emcee in a Broadway production of Cabaret. Performances in the West End of London led to a Olivier award for his part in Accidental Death of an Anarchist, and he received critical acclaim for his role as Dionysus in the National Theatre of Scotland's The Bacchae.

Early in his career he appeared in Taggart and Take the High Road, and was half of comedy duo Victor and Barry, and is a patron of Scottish Youth Theatre.

He has been involved in promoting gay rights in the US and UK, and received an award for his work against homophobia in 2005, and has worked for number of AIDS charities.
