National Library to visit Dundee

Dundee residents are being given the opportunity to find out more about their family history when some of the National Library of Scotland's collections arrive in the city.

The public are being invited to attend a series of talks covering topics as diverse as tracing roots, discovering Old Dundee through historical maps and photographs as well as a chance to view the 'Wish You Were Here' exhibition showcasing interesting travellers' tales.

The event takes place at Dundee Central Library from Wednesday November 25 and Friday November 27.

Janice McFarlane, head of partnerships at the National Library of Scotland said popular TV genealogy programmes such as Who Do You Think You Are - which features celebrities tracing their family trees around the world - have caused a spike in interest around the subject.

She said: "We have definitely seen a steady increase in interest in this area and the amount of information that can be tapped literally at your fingertips is vast.

"We have everything from a genealogical index, old Church of Scotland parochial records, monumental inscriptions records dating back before 1855 and street directories to name but a few.

"The major benefits of visiting the Library both personally and remotely is that our collections are easily accessible and particularly valuable for those whose families came from across Scotland and further afield.

"I have to say we have the perfect tool-kit to provide you with a more detailed picture of how your ancestors lived.

"I hope people will take up this rare opportunity to find out more about the National Library of Scotland's collections, which will hopefully inspire them to find out even more about their past. Our staff will also be on hand to answer any questions to get you on the right path of research."

Leisure, arts and communities Convener Bob Duncan adds: "We are delighted to have Scotland's National Library visit Dundee for this one-off event. It has world-class collections and is a superb opportunity for the public to find out just what treasures the Library has to offer."
