A gang of youths lobbed a stone through the front window of a moving bus in Midlothian, shattering glass into the drivers eye.
He had to be taken to hospital for checks following the incident in Newtongrange, which happened at around 9pm on Thursday.
Police are now hunting the gang, who were seen running off after attacking the number 86 First Bus on Suttislea Road.
A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: "This was a serious incident that had the potential to cause serious injury, and we are appealing for anyone who saw what happened to contact police if they have not already done so.
"We are also keen to speak to anyone who was in the area of Suttislea Road at around 9pm last night, who saw the group of youths either before or after the incident happened.
The gang was thought to contain six teenagers, however, police have so far obtained just two descriptions.
One male is described as being in his teens and 5ft tall, wearing a red hat, a light jacket with a 'V' on the back and white trainers.
A female, also described as being in her teens, is also described as wearing a red hat, along with a light jacket and dark trousers.
