Bad weather continues to batter Scotland

Dumfries and Galloway Fire and Rescue Service said on Thursday night that it had deployed its fire boat and attended "a number" of weather-related incidents throughout the day.

Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for Scottish Borders Council said at 5pm on Thursday: "As far as we are aware, three homes in the Ettrick Valley are affected by flooding and no doubt there are others we are not yet aware of.

"It is anticipated that other domestic properties could be at risk, particularly in the Hawick and Selkirk areas. We continue to work closely with colleagues in the police and fire and rescue, as well as social work and education and lifelong learning, to monitor the situation and respond."

"Teams are on stand-by in case rest centres are required. Arrangements are also being put in place for a recovery operation after the anticipated fall in water levels some time tomorrow," she added.

Earlier, in the centre of Dumfries a car park in the Whitesands area flooded when the River Nith burst its banks. More than 10 rural roads across the Dumfries and Galloway area were closed due to flooding, the council said.

A spokesman for the council said no evacuations were needed or buildings threatened by flooding in the area. Dumfries and Galloway councillor Gillian Dykes, who lives in Moniaive, said: "There is a lot of flooding not only in Dumfries town centre but rural areas. It's still raining. It's still very wet and windy.

"The flooding is causing many hazards on the rural roads. Due to flooding on the roads I can't get to Dumfries. You may be able to with a tractor but I can't with a car."

Heavy rain has hit a number of areas in Scotland throughout Thursday, causing flooding and problems for motorists. In Central Scotland, part of the A9 was closed between Plean and Torwood while there was localised flooding on roads around Strathclyde and Tayside.

The west and south of Scotland has been the worst hit overnight, with around an inch of rain falling at Tyndrum in Argyll and Eskdalemuir in Dumfries and Galloway.

More bad weather is expected to come in the next few days.
