Campaigners submit incinerator petition

Campaigners handed in a petition signed by 3,200 local residents in Perth objecting to a proposed incinerator that could be built near the city centre.

Grundon Waste Management hope to build the waste-to-energy plant on Perth's Shore Road - just a few hundred yards from the city centre and overlooked by houses.

Children from Craigclowan Prepartory School handed in the petition, with thousands of signatures from locals, who object to the scheme based on the noise, smell, pollution and "ugly" look of the building.

Andy Rathborne, Craigclowan's headmaster, said: "I think along with most of the community of Perth it'll be an eyesore that'll be with us for a very long time.

"There are clearly some health issues involved and safeguarding the future and the health of our children is what we're about.

"It's not just about our school, it's about all the children in Perth, people who're going to live here in the future and people who live here at the moment.

"I think that there is enough strength of opinion in Perth that the council really needs to sit up and listen to what we're saying."

Community councillor Dave Beattie said: "We're actually talking about the problem of the next generation. Incinerators last for a long time and the damage they do lasts for many generations

"The waste that will be buried after incineration is very, very toxic, it remains toxic and it will be toxic for generation."
