The city council's antisocial behaviour team is to work closely with accident and emergency department at Ninewells Hospital to help tackle antisocial behaviour.

In what is believed to be the first arrangement of its kind in Scotland, anti-social behaviour orders (ASBOs) will be taken out against disruptive individuals to help prevent further incidents of antisocial behaviour by offenders.

This action is in addition to existing arrangements that are in place to protect the immediate safety of hospital staff.

The protocol was officially signed by Shobhan Thakore, consultant at accident and emergency, Ninewells Hospital, and Councillor Jimmy Black, Convener of Housing at a ceremony in Dundee on Wednesday.

Dr Thakore said: "I think everybody in accident and emergency has experienced being abused and threatened by the public - usually down to alcohol.

"This is just another tool for us to use to show we are not going to tolerate this.

"The aim is that we have an avenue to refer people to the council anti-social behaviour team and inform them of bad behaviour."

Mr Black added: "There is a big problem at the hospital with people assaulting and verbally abusing nurses and doctors.

"Sometimes it is not serious enough to get to court but its still not right.

"What we can do is follow up and issue warnings and if necessary anti-social behaviour orders - and that's really quite serious, because if you break that you can go to jail.  It is a deterrent."
