The cost of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow is to rise by a reported £80million.
Sources say the expanded budget is partly down to current economic difficulties as property sales to be used as part of the games’ funding strategy will not generate as much money as expected.
More money is also required to broadcast the games for high definition television.
Around £60million of the increase will be paid for by the Scottish government, with Glasgow City Council chipping in with £10million.
The original budget when the city won the right to host the games was £373million. Glasgow 2014 is expected to announce details of a review into the event’s funding next week.
