Uni student killed in 'tragic' cliff plunge

A first-year student at St Andrews university plunged 60ft to his death from a cliff in a "tragic accident" near the institution on Friday.

The 19-year-old was with friends when he fell from the cliff in St Andrews at around 1.30am. His body was washed up close to the spot where he fell, in the Scores area of the town, at about 3am.

The student, who has not been named by police, had only just started his course at St Andrews University. He is believed to be from England.

A Fife police spokesman said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

The spokesman added: "Broughty Ferry lifeboat was launched and an RAF search and rescue helicopter was dispatched from Northumberland.

"However, his body was recovered by the fire service just before 3am.

"Ambulance staff performed CPR but he was pronounced dead at the rock face.

"It seems to have been a tragic accident and we are appealing for any witnesses to come forward."

Detective inspector Stuart Welsh, who is leading the investigation into the death, added: "We are particularly keen to speak to a young American man, who may be a university student, who is believed to have spoken to the young man only minutes before his death."

A report would be prepared for the procurator fiscal.
