Busy night for East coast fire crews

Bonfire night proved a busy one for emergency services in the East of Scotland.

Fire crews in the Lothian and Borders and Fife regions responded to nearly 500 calls, the majority the result of out of control bonfires and fireworks.

Two houses in Fife were damaged by blazes set too close to the walls, but there were no casualties in the region.

Meanwhile, the Lothian and Borders Fire Service responded to 429 calls. Staff said they normally respond between 50 and 100 times on a routine night.

Holyrood Park was closed overnight for a second year in a bid to protect plants and wildlife from wildfires caused by rogue fireworks.

The were no serious blazes across either area, but fire crews say Thursday was just the start of a very busy weekend.

They are urging people who want to hold weekend bonfires or fireworks displays to take care, follow instructions and keep flames away from properties.
