Police are appealing for information after a man walked up to a dog walker in the Dennistoun area of Glasgow and attempted to hit his Staffordshire puppy with a metal bar.
Detectives say that at around 2.30pm on Monday November 2 the 43-year-old man was walking along the area's Roslea Drive with his puppy, Molly, when a man approached him.
The assailant then attempted to hit the pup with a metal bar. The shocked victim tried to pick up his dog - but the suspect, still swinging at the animal, struck him on the wrist.
The injured male made his way to Glasgow Royal Infirmary to be treated for his injuries. He is undergoing surgery today for tendon damage. Molly was uninjured.
Strathclyde Police say the suspect is described as an Asian male, aged 20-21, approximately 5'8" tall, of slim build, with short dark hair and wearing a dark top and dark trousers.
Detective Sergeant Aileen Boyle said on Tuesday: "This appears to be a completely unprovoked attack, and it is extremely worrying as to what has caused this man to act in this manner.
"The victim has no feeling in his right hand whatsoever, and will most certainly require plastic surgery to repair the damage caused. He is understandably traumatised at the ordeal he has suffered.
"Roslea Drive would have been fairly busy at 2.30pm yesterday afternoon and I'm certain passers-by may have seen something.
"The suspect ran back along Roslea Drive in the direction of Duke Street after the assault, so I would also appeal to anyone in the area who saw a man fitting the description to contact us. Any information that could trace his movements after the incident would be helpful."
